Celebrex by Pfizer increases Heart
Attack Risk
The pain reliever Celebrex is
manufactured and sold by Pfizer, a leading
pharmaceutical company. Celebrex is known as a
"COX-2 inhibitor," which is a technical name for the
pain relievers Vioxx, Bextra, and Celebrex. Of
those three drugs, only Celebrex is still on the
market.
According to the latest evidence,
Celebrex significantly increases the risk of serious
cardiovascular adverse events, including heart
attack. That risk, according to the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), appears to be a class effect
of non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
(excluding aspirin). Celebrex is a NSAID, and so
are Vioxx and Bextra, which are the other COX-2
inhibitors.
