Racially Discriminatory Insurance

racial discrimination for african americans seeking insurance coverageFor decades, many insurance companies throughout the United States, and particularly in the Southeast, sold small value debit life insurance and burial policies to African-Americans at higher rates than those sold to white citizens for the same or similar coverage. In conjunction with selling small value insurance policies to African-Americans at discriminatory rates, many insurance companies also marketed and sold policies where the reasonably expected premiums paid would far exceed the coverage provided. In addition, the marketing tactics employed by many insurance companies preyed upon emotions and lack of sophistication of those targeted, often resulting in large numbers of policies being sold to individuals.

Racially Discriminatory Insurance Company

Heninger Garrison Davis has initiated several class action lawsuits against the insurance companies which perpetrated the conduct referenced above, and which continues to this day, to collect premiums on policies which were sold in a discriminatory fashion. We have commenced class action lawsuits against Liberty National Insurance Company, National Security Insurance Co., and others.

American General Life & Accident Insurance Co., Life of Georgia, Unitrin, and Metropolitan Life class action gives little compensation.

Separately, our attorneys have kept abreast of national class action settlements of similar claims against American General Life & Accident Insurance Co., Life of Georgia, Unitrin, and Metropolitan Life.  After carefully scrutinizing these settlements and the benefits which would be paid to class members, we concluded that most benefits of the settlement were meager, and that a class member had an excellent opportunity to recover more benefits by pursuing an individual action.  Accordingly, our firm, has represented over 2,000 policyholders who opted out of national class actions against American General, Life of Georgia, Unitrin, and Metropolitan.  We have pursued compensation for those clients on an individual basis and have been very successful to date.

For more information on the progress of the cases which comprise this litigation, please contact attorney Lewis Garrison at wlgarrison@hgdlawfirm.com.
