Our firm is investigating injuries
caused by ReNu MoistureLoc (ReNu), which is a
contact lens solution manufactured by Bausch &
Lomb. ReNu is sold over the counter.
Bausch & Lomb Recalled -
Keratitis Suspected
On April 10, 2006, Bausch & Lomb
announced suspension of shipments of ReNu. The
suspension was announced in light of reports of
fungal keratitis infections or fungal “fusarium” in
users of the solution. This infection can lead to
loss of vision, and blindness.
The FDA reports: “A fungus called
Fusarium has been identified as the cause of the
reported infections. As of April 9, 2006, 109 cases
of suspected Fusarium keratitis are under
investigation by CDC and public health authorities
in 17 states of the U.S.”
CDC data of 30 cases of the
infections reveal that 28 of the 30 persons affected
wore contact lenses and that most of those persons
used the ReNu solution.
Bausch
& Lomb is advising anyone who uses ReNu to stop
using it immediately.
What is Fungal keratitis?
Fungal keratitis is a serious eye
infection that can develop through the whole depth
of the cornea. The infection can require prolonged
drug therapy with antifungals such as natamycin,
nystatin, and amphotericin B. Other antifungals that
may be administered include various Azoles and
Fluorinated pyrimidines. If drugs do not work and
the eye is damaged, surgery may be necessary to
remove fungal ulcers/lesions. Symptoms of fungal
keratitis include eye pain, eye discomfort, decrease
in vision and light hypersensitivity.
