Vioxx Side Effects - Heart Attack Risk
Heninger Garrison Davis is one of the leading law
firms in the country pursuing claims for victims of
heart attacks and strokes caused by Vioxx, a
prescription pain reliever. On November 28, 2006,
our attorneys made opening arguments in the first
trial over Vioxx in the Southeast. The lawsuit was
brought on behalf of our client Gary Albright.
Steve Heninger, Lewis Garrison, and Tim Davis are
our lead attorneys in the case.
Merck & Co., the pharmaceutical giant, launched
Vioxx in 1999. The drug was withdrawn from the
market on September 30, 2004, following reports that
linked it with increased risks of heart attacks and
strokes.
As early as 1996, during clinical trials, Merck
became aware that Vioxx posed an increased risk of
blood clots which could cause heart attacks and
strokes. Later, Merck sponsored a study designed to
test the gastrointestinal safety of Vioxx when
compared to naproxen, another pain reliever. That
study showed an increased risk of cardiovascular
events in patients taking Vioxx, versus patients on
naproxen. Merck thereafter initiated a campaign to
suppress awareness of the cardiovascular risks
exposed by the study.
Our Firm’s Role in Vioxx Litigation
Our attorneys Lewis Garrison and Bill Bross are on
several committees with other plaintiffs' attorneys
who are guiding the consolidated federal cases
against Merck. This consolidated litigation is based
in New Orleans. The first federal trial against
Merck was held in 2005 in Houston (relocation due to
Hurricane Katrina). Trials of our clients’ claims
against Merck began in state court late in 2006.
These trials are some of the earliest in the nation
over Vioxx.
