Community partnerships are at the heart of meaningful change. At Heninger Garrison Davis, LLC (HGD), supporting organizations that improve the lives of injury survivors and their families is a natural extension of the firm’s mission to serve clients with compassion, excellence, and dedication. This year, HGD was proud to once again serve as a Platinum Sponsor of the Alabama Head Injury Foundation’s (AHIF) annual Beer, Band & BBQ event, an important fundraiser that brings the Birmingham community together to support traumatic brain injury survivors across Alabama.

Beyond sponsorship, HGD’s connection to AHIF runs deeper. HGD attorney Erik Heninger serves on the AHIF Birmingham Regional Board, helping guide local engagement and advocacy efforts for individuals and families navigating life after a traumatic brain injury.

Supporting a Mission That Changes Lives

The Alabama Head Injury Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families.

Traumatic brain injuries can dramatically alter a person’s life in an instant. They often occur as the result of car accidents, falls, workplace incidents, or sports injuries. Survivors frequently face long-term challenges involving memory, mobility, emotional regulation, and independence. These challenges also deeply affect caregivers and family members.

AHIF works directly with survivors and their support networks to help ease the transition from hospital or rehabilitation facilities into stable, supportive living environments. Through a wide range of programs—including support groups, mental health counseling, camps, and resource coordination—the organization strives to ensure survivors can live with dignity and independence while avoiding outcomes such as rehospitalization or institutionalization.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Scott Powell, AHIF has continued to expand its reach and services across Alabama. Powell and his team have worked tirelessly to grow programs that meet the physical, emotional, and practical needs of TBI survivors and their families.

Innovative Programs That Support Survivors and Caregivers

AHIF provides services in all 67 counties in Alabama, helping more than 1,200 traumatic brain injury survivors each year.

Some of the organization’s most impactful programs include:

Bright Ideas TBI Camps

One of AHIF’s most innovative initiatives is the Bright Ideas TBI Camp program, which brings together healthcare students and professionals from multiple disciplines to collaborate with TBI survivors and caregivers.

The program was created after AHIF noticed that many survivors experienced stagnation or regression in recovery several years after their injuries. By partnering with universities across the state, AHIF developed a camp environment where interdisciplinary teams can evaluate survivors and develop practical “at-home” plans designed to improve long-term recovery and quality of life.

These camps often involve students from fields such as physical therapy, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, nursing, social work, and more. Participants work closely with survivors and caregivers for several days to identify challenges and develop personalized strategies to help improve daily life and independence.

HGD attorneys have had the privilege of attending Bright Ideas Camp sessions to speak directly with caregivers, answering legal questions related to injury claims, liability, and protecting the long-term interests of survivors. For families navigating the complexities of life after a serious brain injury, access to reliable legal guidance can be an important part of the journey forward.

Recreational and Therapy-Based Camps

In addition to Bright Ideas Camps, AHIF offers recreational camps that provide survivors with opportunities for connection, fellowship, and personal growth. These camps, often held at locations such as Camp ASCCA and Camp McDowell, give participants a chance to build friendships, regain confidence, and experience a sense of community.

For many survivors, these experiences are transformative. They help reduce isolation while reminding participants that they are not alone in their journey.

Support Services and Caregiver Assistance

AHIF also provides support groups, counseling services, and respite care programs that give caregivers short but essential breaks from the demands of around-the-clock care. These programs recognize that recovery from traumatic brain injury is not just about the survivor—it is about supporting the entire family unit.

Beer, Band & BBQ: Bringing the Community Together

The Beer, Band & BBQ event is one of AHIF’s signature community fundraisers, held annually in Birmingham. The event brings together local businesses, community leaders, artists, and supporters for an evening of great food, live music, and powerful storytelling.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the event is the art showcase featuring works created by traumatic brain injury survivors. Through painting and other creative mediums, survivors share their recovery journeys and personal experiences, offering attendees a glimpse into the resilience and determination required to overcome life-altering injuries.

This year, HGD attorneys and staff showed up in full force to support the event and its mission.

HGD Showing Up for the Community

For the HGD team, supporting AHIF is about more than writing a sponsorship check—it’s about being present and engaged.

At this year’s event, HGD staff members connected with attendees and distributed a variety of helpful items, including:

  • HGD/AHIF water bottles
  • Insulated grocery bags
  • Health and safety coloring books for children
  • Educational materials and other giveaways

These simple items are part of HGD’s broader effort to promote safety awareness and community engagement while supporting families affected by serious injuries.

The firm’s presence at the event also reflects its commitment to organizations that align with its core values of being client-centered, integrity-driven, respectful, committed, leadership-oriented, and excellence-focused.

A Shared Commitment to Helping Injury Survivors

For a personal injury law firm, the work of AHIF is deeply meaningful. Every day, HGD attorneys work with individuals and families who are navigating the aftermath of catastrophic injuries, including traumatic brain injuries.

Organizations like AHIF provide resources and community support that extend far beyond the legal process. They help survivors regain confidence, rebuild their lives, and connect with others who understand their experiences.

Through its Platinum Sponsorship, board involvement, and volunteer participation, HGD is honored to stand alongside AHIF in supporting this vital mission.

Looking Ahead

The Alabama Head Injury Foundation continues to expand programs, partnerships, and awareness efforts throughout the state. With leaders like Scott Powell and dedicated volunteers across Alabama, the organization is making a lasting impact in the lives of thousands of families.

HGD Law Firm is proud to be part of that mission.

As the firm looks ahead to future partnerships, community events, and Bright Ideas Camps, one thing remains clear: when organizations and communities work together, the path to recovery becomes stronger for everyone involved.
