Two HGD attorneys, Brandy Robertson and Caroline Hollingsworth recently attended Women’s Lobby Day, which is an educational program sponsored by the Alabama Association for Justice. The key to the program is to educate women lawyers on the importance of public service through their profession whether that is through volunteer groups or running for an elected office as well as to introduce us to the legislative process and how bills and proposed legislation affect our practice. Speakers at the CLE portion of the event were: Lt. Governor Kay Ivey, Judge Mary Windom of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, Judge Beth Kellum of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals and Senator Vivian Figures. Participants went to the State House and sat in on the Judiciary Committee meeting. Several of the bills discussed and voted on in committee were SB 298 dealing with donors who make donations of canned or perishable foods to charitable or non-profit organizations, SB 354 which would allow people to carry loaded pistols in their vehicles without having a concealed carry permit as well as several others.
