At HGD Law Firm, we believe that leadership in the legal profession means more than advocating for clients—it also means sharing knowledge and helping other attorneys grow their skills.
Recently, HGD attorney Erik Heninger served as a faculty member for the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Virtual Deposition College, a nationally recognized training program that helps attorneys strengthen one of the most critical aspects of litigation: taking effective depositions.
A Hands-On Approach to Deposition Training
The four-day virtual program combines instruction with hands-on application. Each day begins with focused training on deposition techniques and strategy, followed by small-group workshops where participants practice those skills in real time under the guidance of experienced trial lawyers.
"It's a unique learning environment because attorneys don't just hear about the techniques—they immediately get to use them," Erik said. "Faculty members work directly with attendees, providing feedback and coaching throughout the exercises."
Building Skills Through Real-Time Practice
As part of the program, Erik taught a session focused on establishing reasonable care and standards of care in negligence cases. The training explored methods attorneys can use to develop testimony in a variety of personal injury matters, including motor vehicle accidents, premises liability claims, property disputes, and medical negligence cases.
Among the attendees was fellow HGD attorney Chris Joseph, who experienced the program's hands-on approach firsthand.
"What makes the AAJ Virtual Deposition College so effective is that you're not just learning concepts—you immediately put them into practice," Joseph said. "Having experienced trial lawyers like Erik provide real-time feedback helps attorneys build skills they can take directly into their next deposition."
That combination of instruction and immediate application is what sets the program apart. Rather than simply discussing deposition theory, attorneys are given the opportunity to practice techniques, receive coaching, and refine their approach in a supportive learning environment.
Why Deposition Training Matters
For trial lawyers, depositions are often among the most important stages of a case. Strong deposition skills can help uncover critical facts, preserve testimony, evaluate witnesses, and position a case for success at trial.
At HGD Law Firm, we are proud to see our attorneys both teaching and learning alongside some of the nation's most respected trial lawyers. Opportunities like the AAJ Virtual Deposition College reflect our commitment to professional development, leadership within the legal community, and delivering exceptional representation to our clients.
With 16 attorneys and a 30-person support team, HGD remains dedicated to providing white-glove service, personalized attention, and relentless advocacy for those we serve. Erik's role as a faculty member at the AAJ Virtual Deposition College is another example of that commitment in action.
