Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing nearly every industry, and the legal profession is no exception.

Recently, Heninger Garrison Davis attorney Erik Heninger joined The AI Weekly Brief podcast to discuss how his law firm is using AI today, where he believes the technology is headed, and why human judgment will remain essential in the practice of law.

AI Is Already Improving Law Firm Operations

While many people think of AI as a future technology, Erik explained that it is already helping law firms work more efficiently behind the scenes.

At Heninger Garrison Davis, AI is being used to assist with tasks such as:

  • Summarizing client intake conversations

  • Organizing meeting notes and transcripts

  • Assisting with legal research

  • Drafting presentations and internal documents

  • Improving knowledge management across the firm

These tools allow attorneys and staff to spend less time on administrative work and more time focusing on clients and legal strategy.

AI Is a Tool—Not a Replacement for Lawyers

One of the key themes of the conversation was that AI should enhance the work attorneys do, not replace them.

While AI can quickly organize information, identify patterns, and improve efficiency, it cannot replace the experience, judgment, and advocacy required to represent clients effectively.

"Technology can make us more efficient," Erik explained, "but it can't replace the human element that great lawyers bring to every case."

The Future of AI in the Legal Profession

During the interview, Erik shared his thoughts on how AI may continue to shape the legal industry over the next decade.

In the near future, he expects AI to streamline client intake and case evaluation, helping law firms review potential cases more efficiently.

Looking further ahead, he believes AI will continue transforming document-heavy legal work while allowing attorneys to devote more time to strategy, client counseling, negotiations, and courtroom advocacy.

The conversation also explored how AI could eventually help reduce certain forms of human bias in legal decision-making while recognizing that complex legal issues will always require thoughtful human judgment.
