HGD Law Firm proudly hosted its 8th Annual "In Summation" Closing Argument Competition, bringing together some of Alabama's most talented future attorneys for an exciting showcase of trial advocacy, persuasion, and courtroom excellence.

This year's competition concluded with a remarkable performance by students from Cumberland School of Law, who claimed all three top honors. Amelia Smith earned First Place and a $1,000 prize, Mary Bishop secured Second Place and $750, and J. Greene received Third Place and $500.

The competition is one of HGD's signature community and educational initiatives, created to encourage advocacy and reward law students who dedicate themselves to developing the skills that are essential to effective trial practice. Through this annual event, HGD seeks to support the next generation of legal advocates while reinforcing the importance of persuasive courtroom communication.

Held in the Stephen D. Heninger Moot Court Room, the competition began with a field of 20 law student competitors representing local law schools. Over the course of two weeks, participants presented closing arguments based on a trial problem and were evaluated on their ability to analyze facts, communicate effectively, and persuade a jury.

As the competition progressed, the field narrowed to the top eight competitors, who advanced to the final rounds. These students faced off in a series of head-to-head advocacy presentations before a mock jury comprised of HGD attorneys and staff members.

HGD attorneys Callen Sparrow, Anna Carroll, and Bill Bross served as judges for the competition, evaluating participants on the qualities that define successful trial lawyers: preparation, organization, credibility, presence, and persuasive advocacy.

The event highlights HGD's long-standing commitment to legal education and professional development. Trial advocacy remains one of the most important skills a lawyer can develop, and opportunities for students to practice those skills in a realistic courtroom environment are invaluable. Through the Closing Argument Competition, participants gain practical experience while receiving exposure to practicing attorneys, legal professionals, and members of the legal community.

Following the final round, HGD hosted an awards reception where the winners were recognized and prize money was presented. The celebration marked the culmination of weeks of preparation, competition, and outstanding advocacy from all participants.

"We are continually impressed by the talent, professionalism, and dedication displayed by these law students," said HGD representatives. "The future of the legal profession is bright, and we are proud to play a role in helping develop the advocates who will one day represent clients, serve communities, and lead our profession."

HGD congratulates Amelia Smith, Mary Bishop, and J. Greene on their outstanding achievements and extends its appreciation to all 20 competitors who participated in this year's event. Their hard work, preparation, and commitment to advocacy made the 8th Annual "In Summation" Closing Argument Competition a tremendous success.

As HGD looks ahead to future competitions, the firm remains committed to investing in legal education, fostering advocacy skills, and supporting the next generation of trial lawyers throughout Alabama.
