One change stands out from last year. Our insurance litigation practice moved from Tier 2 to Tier 1 in Birmingham, joining six other practice areas at the top regional tier. Every other ranking from the 2026 edition held steady.
What Is the Best Law Firms Ranking?
Best Law Firms is a ranking of law firms in the United States produced by Best Lawyers, the same organization behind The Best Lawyers in America, which is now in its 33rd year. Where The Best Lawyers in America recognizes individual attorneys, Best Law Firms evaluates firms as a whole, practice area by practice area and region by region.
Firms are sorted into tiers rather than numbered one through ten. Best Lawyers explains that the score differences between firms are often small, so grouping them into tiers gives a more honest picture than a strict ranking would. A Tier 1 ranking means a firm scored among the top group in that practice area and region.
How Does a Law Firm Earn a Best Law Firms Ranking?
A firm cannot be considered at all unless it has at least one attorney recognized in the current edition of The Best Lawyers in America in that practice area and region. From there, Best Lawyers builds each firm’s score from several independent sources:

Client evaluations. Clients rate a firm’s practice groups on experience, responsiveness, cost-effectiveness, civility, and whether they would refer others.

Peer review. Lawyers in the same field evaluate competing firms, including whether they consider a firm a worthy opponent.

Law firm leaders survey. Firm leaders weigh in on which firms have a strong national presence in nationally ranked practice areas.

Firm submissions. Background information on the firm and its lawyers.
According to Best Lawyers, the 2027 rankings draw on more than 30 million evaluations of over 134,000 lawyers from more than 25,000 firms. National rankings, like HGD’s mass tort recognition, also take into account how a firm performs across regions and the scope of its legal work.
What Does a National Mass Tort Ranking Mean?
Mass tort cases are a different kind of work. A single product, drug, or medical device can harm thousands of people across the country, and each of those people still deserves to be treated as an individual client, not a file number. Doing that well takes organization, staying power, and a team built for it.
Our national Tier 3 ranking in Mass Tort Litigation / Class Actions – Plaintiffs reflects years of work on large-scale cases, paired with a Tier 1 ranking in the same practice area here in Birmingham. It is recognition that a firm based in Alabama can do this work at a national level without losing sight of the person on the other end of the phone.
