The project enlisted Four judges from Jefferson County Circuit Court and eight judges from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama collected data from August to November 2018. The Judges were asked to record the gender and race of the attorneys who took lead, secondary and nonspeaking roles in all matters in their courtrooms. The data was analyzed and resulted in two articles published in the Birmingham Bar Bulletin – New Judicial Study: Birmingham Women Attorneys Trail Behind Men in Courtroom Appearances published in Fall 2020, and Racial Diversity in the Courtroom published in Winter 2021.
